Located on the edge of the Moroccan Sahara, Illigh’s kasbah dominates the landscape for miles around. It was once a power centre on the Trans-Saharan trade routes stretching from Timbuktu across the desert and on to Europe. Through its gates passed gold, ivory and enslaved black people, who were brought to Illigh to be bought and sold. Some descendants still live here and are featured in this photo book, The Old Kasbah of Illigh.

This publication is rich in cultural heritage and also includes photos of the architecture and terrain, portraits of the ruling Aboudmiaa family, traces of the long-departed Jewish community and a spectacular annual festival that’s a meeting place for people from far and wide. About Annie Wright
The work of Annie Wright (NL/UK) has been shown widely including at the Institute of Contemporary Art (London), Highlanes Gallery (Drogheda, Ireland), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the Doulun Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai). It is part of the collections of the Arts Council (UK), the British Film Institute, the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage and the Musée d’Illigh, Morocco.

In December 2016, her photographs of the ancient city of Palmyra were added to the archive of the Musée d’Archéologie nationale in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (France), where they are being used as source material for the ancient city’s restoration following its destruction by ISIS. In 2019 she was artist in residence at the Ness of Brodgar archaeological dig, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Orkney, Scotland.
