The An Corrán Music Circle is a popular traditional event that thrives in the isolated community of Corraun on Ireland’s West Coast.
Over the years, Peti Buchel has documented these music gatherings. Her on-the-spot sketches reflect the sessions’ fluid, spontaneous and deeply social nature.
The Circle is not about musical perfection. Rather it encourages the audience, both young and old, to participate, to pass on this tradition and undermine social seclusion. The publication of these drawings not only renders intangible heritage tangible, it also reaches a wider public and serves as a record of the local community’s identity.

Peti Buchel is a Dutch artist. She has been visiting the Corraun Peninsula in County Mayo for 50 years. Peti has a number of publications about Ireland to her name. www.petibuchel.com
This book is accompanied by short texts by John Hoban and Marina Tuffy, both in English and Irish. They briefly tell the story of how this Music Circle came about and the positive social impact it has had on the local community.
The book is exquisite—beautiful in nearly every respect: the illustrations, the printing, the layout, the choice of paper stock, and even the binding, despite the risk that comes with such high artistic ambition. It’s truly lovely. The double-folded front and back covers are a splendid solution and more besides.
